Xiamen identifies 7 high-risk ocean areas for swimmers

City authorities recently released a risk map for local ocean areas, identifying seven spots that put swimmers at an elevated risk of drowning or injury.

The Cape Number Nine area in Haicang off Haicang Avenue is dangerous because of the adjacent high-volume boat channel. Maluan Bay contains disused fishing gear that can entangle swimmers. The Xiangan beach off Binhai has a high volume of silty sand that can entrap oceangoers.

The Zeng Cuoan sea area is prone to quicksand. The Baicheng beach area adjacent to Xiamen University features riptides and whirlpools.

Multiple reefs off Gulangyu also pose a risk to area oceangoers.
