The city of Xiamen's permanent resident population hit 5.18 million at the end of 2020, up from 3.56 million at the end of 2010, according to data from China's seventh national census. Xiamen's growth rate put it in the top 10 for Chinese cities between 2010 and 2020.
The mainland districts of Haicang, Jimei, Tongan and Xiangan drive the city's population growth. The four districts collectively added 1.38 million residents over the past decade, accounting for roughly eighty percent of the city's growth.
Jimei topped the city's districts in growth, roughly doubling in population to hit a new high of 1.04 million residents, putting it on par with Huli and Siming.
Xiamen urbanization rate increased from 88.3 percent in 2010 to 89.4 percent, making it the most urbanized sub-provincial city in China.
